With HAE being a rare disease, there were not a lot of people or medical professionals familiar with it.
I recall the frequent attacks affecting our day to day life:
- We were forced to cancel plans
- My husband missed several days of work each month
- People stopped inviting us to events.
One of the most frustrating things that stands out in my mind is how unpredictable HAE is. We keep track of what we feel triggers my husband’s attacks…
- Certain physical activities
- Physical stress from lack of sleep
- Mental stress
…and do our best to avoid them.
But as a police officer, his lifestyle has been a recipe for HAE attacks.
Our HAE treating physician told us about FIRAZYR® (icatibant injection), a treatment for acute HAE attacks in adults 18 years of age and older. FIRAZYR is a self-administered treatment that my husband can use at the onset of every acute HAE attack. It’s also portable, so he can carry his FIRAZYR when at work and traveling.
Of course, there are the risk of side effects with FIRAZYR, such as injection site reactions, fever, and dizziness. Other side effects include nausea, headache, and rash.
After talking about the “pros” and the “cons” with his doctor, my husband now treats every HAE attack at onset with FIRAZYR. He feels like he’s doing what he can to take charge of his HAE
