It still amazes me how quickly a connection can be made between people who have a life experience in common—and how personal the connection can be. I feel so grateful for the HAE community where I have made connections with several people who have become my “HAE Family.” With those people, I found our experiences with HAE helped us to bond. My “HAE Family” has, over the years, given me love, support, encouragement, and a safe place to vent.
And many of them can be available 24/7! I have reached out to others in the middle of the night for comfort and have gotten the reassurance I needed. From the moment some of us met, we instantly felt like a family and I think that we will be friends for life. Unfortunately, I’m not able to be with them in person very often—but when I am with them, the time is priceless to me! It is certainly a case of quality time being just as important as the quantity of time.
Whether we are near or far, communication keeps flowing. I love that my “HAE family” understands so often exactly how I am feeling—even if the words aren’t there. I have shared countless laughs and many tears with others in my “HAE Family.” Relationships are being built throughout our biological families, too, as we meet each other’s husbands and wives and widen the family circle even further. I am truly grateful and blessed to have my “HAE Family.”
