Attack the Attacks

My Plan of Attack

Published on June 10, 2015 in Attack the Attacks

I was lucky to be diagnosed with HAE at an early age. And yet, it took me a long time to motivate myself to seriously seek medical help—instead, I endured the excruciating pain of my HAE attacks. I guess I figured I’d just try to weather the storm. I’ve since learned that HAE is not something I can ignore. I have to work with my doctor, so she can help me better handle my HAE. I want to do my best to be as active in my life as I possibly can.

Eventually, after dealing with too many painful HAE attacks, I’d finally had enough. I made an appointment with the doctor who’d diagnosed me, and talked to him about treatment options. Through him and his team, I heard about FIRAZYR® (icatibant injection), a medication approved for the treatment of acute HAE attacks in adults 18 years of age and older, which I use to treat my HAE attacks as soon as I recognize symptoms. I make sure to always have the medication with me, whether I’m at home, out running errands, or at work.

FIRAZYR is an injection you can give yourself just under the skin, as soon as you recognize symptoms of an HAE attack, after you have been trained by a healthcare professional.

When I have an HAE attack, I take a few deep breaths, and inject the medication.  Taking deep breaths definitely helps me conquer the process, and I do so before and after injecting. I have learned that it helps me relax and stay calmer. But this is just my experience; it’s important to remember that everyone is different and has their own way of coping.

The most common side effects of FIRAZYR are injection-site reactions such as redness and swelling.

I have also made sure to inform the local fire department and emergency responders as part of my preparedness plan, just in case I need their assistance. It gives me some peace of mind. Even just having the support of my family and friends adds to my plan of attack. If I’m ever in need of support, I know they’ll be there for me.
